QUECHUA, LANGUAGE OF THE INCAS
Quechua ("qheshwa")was the official language of the Inca Empire. Today it is spoken by approximately 13 million people in Latin America: Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Northern Chile, Argentina, and Southern Colombia.
In Peru, a quarter of the population speaks Quechua, and about a third of the Quechua speakers speak no Spanish.
The best-known form of Quechua is that spoken in Cusco (Qosqo), in southern Peru and east to Bolivia.
Quechua is an agglutinating language because the root of a word can be followed by one or more suffixes.
