QUECHUA, LANGUAGE OF THE INCAS

Quechua ("qheshwa")was the official language of  the Inca Empire.  Today it is  spoken by approximately 13 million people in Latin America: Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Northern Chile, Argentina, and Southern Colombia.

In Peru, a quarter of the population speaks Quechua, and about a third of the Quechua speakers speak no Spanish.

The best-known form of Quechua is that spoken in Cusco (Qosqo), in southern Peru and east to Bolivia

Quechua is an agglutinating language because the root of a word can be followed by one or more suffixes.

HOW  I  WORK

Lessons are private unless otherwise requested.

A full time schedule comprises 20 hours a week (Monday through Friday, 2 hours grammar and 2 hours conversation)

The lessons can take place at my home or at a cafe downtown, complemented with fieldtrips to the traditional markets in Cusco and Chincheros, places where it is easy to encounter native Quechua speakers.

I provide all study materials

HOW I LEARNED QUECHUA

I first learned Quechua from my grandmother Josefa(picture above),  who lived  in the town of Maras in the province of Urubamba.  A town where 90% of the population speaks Quechua as a first language.

Thanks to her I learned my first words as a child at the age of six. From that age, I spent every vacation with Josefita until I was twelve. Each vacation was an opportunity to learn more.

I also spoke Quechua with my mother, but only about 10% of the time. The dominant language in our household is Spanish.

In order to round out my knowledge of Quechua, I later studied the grammar at the Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco and became a certified teacher.
